The Good The Bad The Ugly

My name is Eliza Parla Gürocak a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University. I am an aspirant designer that specialises in womenswear. I was raised in a Turkish and English background, which I know has made me culturally aware and educated of what others may expect of us as a Turkish and Muslim woman. On my placement year, I worked in Istanbul, Turkey for 8 months where I worked with 200 women and men, where I was exposed to many diverse 'Turkish' cultural norms and beliefs. So, as part of my research, I've looked at the country's cultural attitudes about women from the time of the Ottoman Empire to when Atatürk was president, to present day where President Erdogan is in office. From the beginning of my designs, I wanted to depict the progression of what some women are supposed to appear like, only to reveal a woman who's technically covered but still has body parts exposed.
