Growing up with a single mum who worked long hours I always envied my friends with PTA parents who arrived early at the school gates, but I grew up and realised the grass isn’t always greener. The tradition of stay-at-home housewives has a romanticized and sexualised – mainly by men – history which stems from women being taught at a young age that having a husband and a well-kept house should be their only ambition. My collection is a dramatic interpretation of the unachievable body standards and lifestyles women in the 40’s – 60’s believed were their only option in order to marry a successful man. Heavily inspired by the 1975 film The Stepford Wives and Jello salad’s, my use of plastic’s represents the structure of Bullet bras, Tupperware and Formica kitchens that were a stable in a housewives daily life.
