‘Suspicious Nuances’

MAYA RUTLAND

Location: LONDON, UK
University/College: University of Westminster Specialisms: PATTERN CUTTING / TAILORING / WOMENSWEAR / ACCESSORY DESIGN / TEXTILES
Maya Rutland is a womenswear designer, who took key influences from medieval ideas on twins, being a fraternal twin herself, Maya took inspiration from the subtle nuances between herself and her twin sister to create a collection that highlights them both as individuals but using a continuous theme of mirroring within designs that translate their closeness and similarities. ‘Suspicious Nuances’ plays on the idea of medieval superstitions and mythical ideologies around twins that is still somewhat prevalent today, for example folklore describes twins to be occasionally portrayed as mischievous or tricky due to their mirrored appearances; a bad omen sent by the gods. Medieval ideas and drawings played a large part in building silhouettes, pattern cutting, influencing the shapes and design.
