Eligibility

In order to be considered for the BFC/GQ Designer Menswear fund applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants should have an established designer fashion business that has been trading for a minimum of three years
  • The applicant's collection should consist primarily of menswear and/or menswear accessories and not primarily consist of womenswear or childrenswear
  • Applicant’s company should be based in the United Kingdom and registered with Companies House (not sole trader)
  • Applicants who produce fashion shows or presentations must show at London Fashion Week
  • Applicants should have international and UK stockists and/or sell direct to consumer
  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate support from both UK and international media
  • Applicants can apply up to five times
  • The award can only be won once 

Assessment Criteria

Applications will be reviewed against the following areas:

  • The applicants should demonstrate an established designer business which has the potential to achieve real growth with additional resource and specialised support, including demonstrating that they have access to quality production and scale up viability
  • Creative merit: demonstrating a strong aesthetic and point of difference
  • The quality of stockists, UK and international, and/or proven direct to consumer sales channels
  • The level and quality of international and UK media recognition
  • The applicant’s demonstration of how they are addressing the three pillars of Positive Fashion: Environment, People and Craftmanship & Community
  • Applicant’s ability to demonstrate a clear vision on how The Fund will contribute to the growth of their business

  • Applications for 2020 are now open, click here to apply.
  • Applications must be received by midday on Monday 24th February 2020. If your application is late it will not be considered.
  • Applicants must ensure that they have the following information available before starting the application process:
    • Company Information
    • Lookbook /Portfolio (JPEG or PDF) for the last 2 seasons
    • Latest press book
    • Referees
    • Financial Information (please download and complete the Excel document before completing your application)
    • Most Recent End of Year Accounts (PDF)
    • A short statement of how they are addressing the three pillars of Positive Fashion: Environment, People and Craftmanship & Community
    • Plan for expenditure of The Fund
  • Failure to complete the form correctly and supply all requested information will invalidate the application
  • The equal opportunities section must be completed, this will be kept on file for information only and will not affect the applicant’s entry
  • No samples should be submitted unless requested 

 

Judging Process

  • Applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by a judging committee chaired by British GQ Editor Dylan Jones, OBE and CEO of the British Fashion Council, Caroline Rush CBE, alongside industry experts and funding representatives
  • Applicants will be informed if they have been shortlisted in February 2020
  • The Shortlist will be informed via email and invited to attend a mentoring session in April 2020
  • Ahead of the interview the Shortlist will be asked to submit a five-year business plan focusing on areas for growth and how the prize money will help develop their business into a global brand
  • The Shortlist will be interviewed by the Fund judging committee in April 2020. Applicants will be required to prepare four looks from their most recent collection (models will be provided)

The winner will be announced in May 2020. All shortlisted applicants must attend the announcement event.
