Exploring themes of surrealism and absurdity, designer Mel Hewgill references the work of artist Joan Miró and historical photographs of clown costumes to create her graduate menswear collection, ‘Sobreteixims’. Mel creates playfully oversized, draped silhouettes that harness harlequin diamond motifs within tailoring and celebrate the simplicity of stripes. The expressive textures of Miró’s tapestry works, known as ‘sobreteixims’, inform striking hand-knitted pieces. Flamboyance, colour and fun emerge as a breath of fresh air in this accomplished menswear statement.
