Location: Truro, UK
University/College: Falmouth University Specialisms: Fashion Design: womenswear, menswear, drape, tailoring
Through the use of layering, wrapping, drape and tailored elements, Kohji is a collection of high quality, durable garments with expressive silhouettes based on protective clothing. Research into men’s workwear such as bespoke waistcoat designs, Japanese workwear, protective clothing such as Mackintosh and the Trench coat, and the history of the cape, led into pleat experimentation to create volume and fluidity. I work directly onto the stand. Half-scale, and full-scale. Throughout my development, I have re-examined each element of my garments, questioning their part within not only the aesthetic experience but also the experience of the wearer. The garments can be adapted through layering to be worn throughout the year. This lends itself well to a more sustainable approach to dress where clothes can be worn and re-worn to expand their lifespan. As a designer, circularity and sustainability are important to me which is why I prioritise creating garments using quality materials and finishes to ensure that the overall longevity of the garment is increased.
