Location: London, United Kingdom
University/College: London College of Fashion Specialisms: MA Fashion Design Technology Womenswear
Georgia Gough, an accomplished seamstress and designer with nearly a decade of experience in luxury fashion, explores the forgotten histories of women in textile and garment industries through her collection, WomensWork. Her work highlights the value of craft from individual and collective perspectives, informed by extensive research challenging exploitative industry practices. Gough's designs draw on iconography from Scottish witch trials, using triangular shapes in pattern cutting to reveal concealed intricacies within clothes. She interrogates 16th-century tie-on pockets and workwear references in her design process, alongside drawn thread embroidery and Japanese Sashiko patchwork techniques, honouring skilled hands and emphasising the humanity of tactile needlework. By repurposing crafted materials and using natural and recycled fabrics from local mills, Gough's approach reduces waste, promotes longevity, and respects heritage while preserving workers' identities and livelihoods.
