Although Alice in Wonderland may seem an innocent story, it is frequently associated with drug trips, mental illnesses and repressed/oppressed characters. Combining Alice with inspiration from powerful, feminist movements, such as Riot Grrrls, I have infused pink and “Wonderland” colour palettes with humour and more sinister concepts to critique the ridiculousness of certain normalised situations. Referencing Jefferson Airplane’s song White Rabbit “aimed at hypocritical parents and their habit of reading drug-laced stories to children at their most impressionable age.”, I have drawn ideas for developing prints for my collection, using psychedelic patterns and colours layered with 1970’s stylised fonts to form “Drink Me”.
