Facade

Façade: a false state of exhibition, created to conceal imperfection. The exacting silhouette and aesthetic of the early 19th century called for bodies of a Grecian standard. Fashion plates and illustrations portray gentleman of a perfect physique, with unwavering confidence and assurance. But in reality, these images are simply a facade. Driving a need to hide imperfection and meet these false ideals, menswear from the period was heavily fitted and panelled, aided by buttoning and lacing. Precisely cut and designed to exhibit and accentuate specific areas of the body and to conceal and hide others - from seams and panelling to the varying transparencies of the fabric. Fabrications include natural silks and cottons in subtle finishes and weights, an ode to the delicacy and particularity of garments from this period.
