Location: London, UK
University/College: Royal College of Art Specialisms: Humanwear, Knitwear
Yangziqi Tan, born in China, completing her BA in Public Art in Shanghai. Now pushing knitwear, her work focuses on her own culture specifically, Miao Nationality/group, in her group there are many traditional, ceremonial rituals. These traditions she feels show very brave and powerful spirit representing an unwavering loyalty to love which is romanticized with the idea of danger. This ceremony is part of connecting with the inner self and to collectively gather with the group. Yangziqi is compassionate about material choice and composes conversations between materials to formulate a direction and feeling. She embraces her own imperfections and despises the idea of forgiving and working for perfection and its limitations. The works are not considered or labelled as garments since they can be viewed with and without the body, as soft sculpture art pieces which really sit in a beautiful, fluid space of wearable functionality.
