My project surrounds the concept of period-proof activewear with a purpose of reducing the stigma commonly attached to menstruation. Often, menstruating consumers feel uncomfortable on their period when wearing activewear. By adding a period-proof gusset to these garments, audiences state they have an ease of mind, and a sense of freedom. My project concept was inspired by my placement spent with Periodical powers, a brand who opened my eyes to the subject of menstruation. Since then, I have learnt so much about different menstruation experiences. Within this project I investigated the use of various materials experimenting with recycled, absorbent, and biodegradable options including econyl; recycled nylon created using up-cycled fish nets. Econyl connects with my sustainability ethos as well as my chosen print/colour story: the vibrancy of life under water. I wanted to create a dynamic collection with lively prints you rarely see in sportswear.
