The Evolution of Identity

My collection reflects my own identity evolution through hair and hairstyles. The narrative flows from the first outfit to the last following the concept of ‘coming out of your shell’. The first outfit uses tailoring to reflect the delicate internal membranes of eggs with the use of horsehair and pattern nodes to sleeve heads. The second outfit looks out from within the egg, using shiny hemp silk to explore the mystery of what is inside the egg. The third outfit explores how we emerge from the egg and start to experiment with our identity. This is conveyed using tailoring which curves around the body. The fourth outfit explores how we tentatively start to explore our identities whilst still metaphorically remaining inside the egg. Creating my own embedded hair textiles has allowed me to create unique tailored pieces which are sustainable and ethical using a combination of used and recycled hair as well as sustainable fabrics. This is a core component of my creative practise.
