BILATERAL BEING

HARRIET HOOOPER

Location: Leeds, United Kingdom
University/College: Leeds Arts University Specialisms: MENSWEAR/UNISEX
‘Bilateral Being, AW24’ is inspired by the parallel between anamorphic art, transformational garments and a brain condition that Hooper lives with, called ‘bilateral vestibular hypofunction’. Hooper creates contemporary menswear that can be worn by all genders. The collection consists of a rage of oversized wide garments that hold her own anamorphic print made from her brain scans. Textures and fabrics include crushed suede in waved lines, Duffle wool and natural cotton drill . When looking at anamorphic art it has the reverse effect as it only looks like the ‘correct’ image when it is shown by a curved mirror or chrome pipe. To add another layer to her work she wanted the garments to be transformational,  just as anamorphic art that can be shown in two forms is. With her collection featuring a coat that turns into a bag as well a transformable hat that folds into a curved side bag and other multifunctional garments including a belt bag that transforms into a rucksack.
